summary: kinetic typography video from this scene in Pushing Daises 1.01 - "Pie-Lette"

Ned: I asked you not to use the word 'zombie'. It's disrespectful.
Stumbling around squawking for brains, it's not how they do!
And un-dead? Nobody wants to be un-anything.
Why begin a statement with a negative? It's like saying "I don't disagree". Just say you agree.
Emerson: Are you comfortable with living dead?
Ned: You're either living or you're dead! When you're living you're alive, when you're dead that's what you are.
But when you're dead and then you're not, you're alive again!
Can't we say alive again?
Didn't that sound nice?
Emerson: Sounds like you're a narcoleptic.
Ned: I suffer from sudden and uncontrollable attacks of deep sleep?
Emerson: What's the other one?
Ned: Necrophiliac!
Emerson: Words that sound alike get mixed up in my head.
Olive: Me too! I used to think masturbation meant chewing your food.
I don't think that anymore.
So this was mostly for a school project but it was also for fun! I've seen lots of different typography type videos on YouTube and think they're just the coolest thing so I had to give it a shot. Experiments are fun....right?
I had a really hard time choosing the audio source. I wanted it to be long enough that I would actually have something to work with and try lots of stuff with but I didn't want it to be so long that it would be overwhelming and get boring to watch! I also, obviously, wanted something that didn't have a lot of background noise in it. I wanted each of the characters to be easily heard. I eventually decided on this one because I thought it fit that criteria and it's Pushing Daisies! It's cute and funny! Hee :)
It took me a lot longer than I thought it would. I figured syncing the words up with the audio couldn't be that hard or all that different from matching clips with beats in a regular vid. I was wrong. It's a lot different when people speak than when they sing with music. I know that this isn't exactly up to par with a lot of the typography videos out there - not even close really. But it was a really fun little thing to try and experiment and get to know After Effects with. So hopefully, if nothing else, it at least makes you smile!

Anyway, I loved it! Great choice of scene, wordy without being too wordy, and easy to follow. I really enjoyed it! :D ♥!

I used Adobe After Effects to make it. Well, AE and Adobe Illustrator.
I also used this unbelievably helpful tutorial lol
Thank you again for watching and commenting :)

I'd never seen a typography video either up until a little while ago. The ones I've seen though are extremely awesome and I just couldn't resist!
Thank you again for watching and for the lovely feedback :)

You should totally do it too, btw. It was a lot of fun.
It took a lot of actual thinking on my part lol, cuz I had to like lay out how I wanted the final thing to look before I even started editing anything. But it was fun to do all the different transitions and such, so I'm very glad that you enjoyed that aspect of it!
Thank you! :D

I think you did an awesome job matching the text timing and the treatment of the text with the connotations of the words and pacing of their dialogue.
December 6 2008, 08:00:47 UTC 3 years ago
And thank you SO much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And that the timing and all the technical stuff worked as well, that's a huge relief :)

it's too cute =]
I've always wanted to try one myself, just never knew where to start lol I think I'm going to look into it now
Thanks so much for sharing =]

Although I think the show itself provided most of the adorableness and cleverness ;)

Would it be... oh so wrong for me to put this up at my lj and make a fuss? >.>

I think that is exactly the reason why I went with Pushing Daisies in the end - the dialogue was witty and fun and the speed of the conversation seemed to work really well too.
I'm so thrilled that you liked those particular parts. Those were probably the ones that took the most work, so that's a very huge relief :)
Thank you SO much, again, for watching and for leaving such lovely feedback

I wanted to do more with the colors than just plain old black and white because Pushing Daisies is definitely not a plain b&w kinda show! Hee so I'm glad the colors worked for ya!

I'm very excited that you liked those particular parts! Those were probably the ones that were the most difficult. It's hard being creative when Ned speaks cuz he gets very repetitive, like the whole alive means your alive and not dead and blah blah lol. So yes, I'm very glad that those parts worked!
I didn't want it to be just plain black and white either because Pushing Daisies is definitely not a plain show! So I tried to kinda match the text colors with their personalities. I couldn't resist making Olive the hot pink :)
Thank you so much for watching and for the lovely feedback. Totally made my day!

Aw I know :(
When I first started making it I was all excited and happy cuz, well, it's Pushing Daisies! But while I was finishing it, the mood was all very depressing and bittersweet. I'm gonna miss this damn show :(

Hee, my thoughts exactly! I figured if people didn't like it then I could at least distract them with the cuteness of PD :)
